Massachusetts 24Q Substance Abuse Evaluations
Court-Ordered Alcohol & Drug Assessments
Under Massachusetts law, a 24Q assessment is required in certain OUI cases, including when evidence in the case establishes a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.20% or greater and the individual is convicted or assigned to an alcohol or substance use program. A 24Q assessment may also be required for certain repeat OUI offenses.
What Does a 24Q Evaluation Include?
A 24Q assessment may include:
Alcohol and drug use history
Review of the OUI and prior substance-related incidents
Standardized assessment measures
Substance use disorder assessment
Relevant treatment and mental health history
Clinical findings and recommendations
Being required to complete an assessment does not automatically mean you have a substance use disorder or need treatment.
What Happens After the Assessment?
A written report documents the evaluation findings and any recommended course of treatment. Section 24Q requires the assessment and recommendations to be reported to the appropriate probation or parole officer.
